We are preserving our democracy state by state
North Carolina State Legislature
“For those who want democracy and the rule of law in the United States after 2024, now is the time to organize, to prepare to win locally and nationally, and to talk not only about what is to be lost but what can be gained.”
— Timothy Snyder, Professor of History, Yale University
Why states matter
We support work in states where power can be shifted by as little as a few hundred votes; states where our relatively small contributions can elect Democrats and truly effect change.
State legislatures affect YOUR voting rights, healthcare, congressional districts, reproductive rights, gun legislation, climate, public schools…
States are now the front lines protecting individuals in the face of a Trump presidency and Project 2025
States have the power to blunt Federal budget cuts and restrictive policies according to The States Project research in areas such as:
Education: Even if the Department of Education is disbanded, the federal government provides only 8% of education funding. States can
fund free school meal programs
mandate gun safety policies including universal background checks
set curriculum guidelines
ensure public college tuition remains affordable
Environment: Even if the EPA is eliminated, states have the power to implement 75% of the Paris Climate Agreement and can
adopt standards to improve air quality and protect their communities from radiation
enshrine EPA clean drinking water standards into state law
“Kitchen Table Policies:” Even if taxes are lowered for the very rich and inflation grows, states have the power to
address paid family and sick leave and protect against discrimination
lower costs of prescription drugs
regulate utilities and electricity costs
strengthen child labor protection laws
Voting: Even if the president questions results, states still
set the ground rules on who can vote
set boundaries for congressional districts
designate the number and location of polling places
Our work NEVER stops; we must remain engaged and committed. Elections do not have an off year.
State legislatures have a huge impact.
Our 2025 Goals
Help raise early seed money for state legislative candidates to build campaigns for the 2026 elections
Provide funding in 2025 for candidates in Virginia’s November 4th legislative election
Work with The States Project to equip state legislators with the tools, training and networks to enact new laws to benefit all their constituents
Please join our Giving Circle.
When you contribute to our Giving Circle, you automatically become a member. Whether you give $10 or $10,000, you will have an equal vote in deciding where our contributions go. Together, we can make a real difference in the state(s) we choose.
“Our campaign wasn’t just a campaign. It was a movement. Communities with little in common but a desire for something better for the next generation came together.”
— Representative Diamond Staton Williams, HD-73, North Carolina
